The Century Home

A smaller project that included some much needed maintenance for this 1893 home. Improving the old, deteriorating joists in the basement, levelling out the floors, replacing some windows, a new metal roof and adding a second bathroom made this space feel maintained and ready for a busy family! The main floor bathroom, laundry and mud room have been renovated to make them more user friendly and attractive. Keeping the original character in place included refinishing much of the original wood floors and stairs.

This home will continue to see upgrades over time as budget and lifestyle allow.  Future plans include replacement of the ceramic kitchen floor as well as all cabinetry. After that, the exterior siding will be replaced with a colourful board and batten and include new shutters and molding on the porch and gables. Not only is it a much more comfortable home, but the value has more than doubled!

Another stage to this ongoing restoration was completed and includes updating the kitchen cabinets and restoring the original Pine Plank Floors. An upgrade of the hydro system as well as new thermal pane windows throughout the main floor were the practical side of the work. It was a shame to see the old seeded glass go, but unfortunately they were no longer efficient at all. They will be reused in part for other projects and for some Creative Design in the garden and on the porch!

The second floor was brought up to date by smoothing out all of the textured ceilings, replacing the flooring, and a fresh coat of paint throughout. New light fixtures, faucets and restoration of original trims all contributed to keeping the home with that awesome Century feel – just more efficient and clean feeling 🙂
